What is a coat worth? $50? $100? To a friend of ours named Rita (not her real name), a coat is priceless.
As the Church Planter/Pastor of Mosaic Baptist in Brooklyn, I am always on the lookout for opportunities for our church to serve our community. Last December, we were able to partner with our association (MNYBA) and Baptist churches from North Carolina to celebrate Coats 4 the City. Since we live in Crown Heights, we called it Coats 4 Crown Heights! We met many folks from the neighborhood as we gave away winter coats on a cold winter day. Set up in a neighborhood park (only a few blocks from where we worship on Sundays), we gave away coats, hot chocolate and sang Christmas carols. We even had a dramatic reading of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas."
Many people were grateful for the coats they received. The greatest impact, however, was in the life of one of our volunteers. You see, in addition to MNYBA and the churches from NC, we teamed up with a local PTA. The PTA brought several volunteers to serve alongside our mission team, as well as the volunteers from Mosaic.
A few months later, the President of the PTA reached out to me to tell me of an urgent need in the life of one of those volunteers that we served with. With help from MNYBA, we were able to provide Rita with counsel and, eventually, with a church family that would embrace her and her family. Rita trusted Christ and we are grateful that we've had the opportunity to be a small part of her family. We are not sure what the next steps in her journey will be. But we are glad that we met her through Coats 4 Crown Heights! What is a coat worth? To Rita, a coat is priceless.
